Taking a break from his Prophets of Rage project, Tom Morello joined X Ambassadors on stage this past weekend when the group performed at Lollapalooza. Morello and X Ambassadors recently teamed up for the collaboration “Collider,” and that song’s video is available today (August 1).
Although the video wasn’t shot at Lollapalooza, it manages to capture a bit of what their live performance must have been like. Director Tess Harrison shot it in Los Angeles, capturing the energy X Ambassadors and Morello bring to the stage with the video’s lighting and quick but not spastic editing.
At times yellow and at others white, the lighting brings a fierce feeling to the entire song. Depending on the tempo and the song’s mood at the moment, yellow light either explodes to backlight all the players, or white light punctuates the tempo. Rather than cut a narrative in between live shots, “Collider” sticks with a full performance, focusing heavily on the way lead singer Sam Harris interacts with Morello as he wails on the song’s central riff.
“Collider” appears on VHS 2.0, the deluxe edition of X Ambassador’s album VHS.
