Blur and Oasis Agree about ‘Brexit’

By Hayden Wright

It’s been more than two decades since the dramatic “Battle of Britpop” divided fans of Blur and Oasis in Great Britain. Blur’s single “Country House” debuted on the same day as Oasis’ “Roll with It” and the U.K. tabloid media fervently covered the rivalry. Since then the bands have had a long and checkered history of jabs and slights, but members of Blur and Oasis agree on one thing: Great Britain’s exit from the European Union (“Brexit”) is cause for grief, not celebration.

On the Oasis front, Noel and Liam Gallagher both expressed their dismay. On Instagram, Noel called it a “Black Day,” while Liam tweeted “Stop the world [I’m] getting off.”

Meanwhile, at Glastonbury, Blur’s Damon Albarn said, “I have a very heavy heart today because to my mind, democracy has failed us. Democracy has failed us because we were ill-informed.”

Despite their backstory, two bands once powerfully symbolic of British youth culture are united in their dismay over Brexit.
