Mere hours after they released their newest single “Oblivious” off their upcoming EP Future Present Past, The Strokes decided to give fans another taste and release a second single, “Drag Queen.”
The songs are incredibly different. “Drag Queen” has a much darker sound than “Oblivious” thanks in part to the electric guitar and bass lines that move against each other in physically thrilling ways.
In addition to that through line, Julian Casablancas’ vocals have a manipulated feel at times, pitching higher than normal before resolving back into his usual timbre. The song devolves into atonality at the halfway point, but the steady beat keeps everything grounded until it builds back into a rock song.
