Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! had one of the most spirited reactions to North Carolina’s anti-LGBT “bathroom bill” when it was passed early this year. The legislation entered the national conversation by forbidding transgender people from using gendered bathrooms consistent with their identities.
As a transwoman who has openly shared her experience, she said performing in the state would make an unmissable opportunity to raise awareness and provoke change. Other musicians like Bruce Springsteen canceled shows in protest, while Grace decided to move forward with something to say.
At Against Me!’s Durham, North Carolina show this weekend, Grace delivered on the promise: During the set, she revealed her original birth certificate (which recognized her as a man) and burned it before the crowd, saying, “Goodbye, gender!”
