Bono knows how to fight the terrorists, and he’s sharing those opinions with a Senate subcommittee. According to the U2 frontman, the government should send comedians like Amy Schumer and Chris Rock to really hit terrorists where it hurts: their funny bone.
Bono appeared in Washington on April 12th, where he told senators, “Don’t laugh. I think comedy should be deployed. It’s like, you speak violence, you speak their language. But you laugh at them, when they’re goose-stepping down the street, and it takes away their power. So, I’m suggesting that the Senate send in Amy Schumer, and Chris Rock, and Sacha Baron Cohen, thank you” (via The Guardian).
The crowd’s reaction prompted Bono to reiterate that he was being quite serious on the matter.
New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen defended Bono’s statement, saying, “Actually, that’s not the first time I’ve heard experts on how do we counter violent extremism talk about that. It’s one of the things that we’re looking at.”
It’s certainly thinking outside the box, but whether Schumer, Rock and others will want to be deployed to combat ISIS with laughter is another matter. As to why Bono, artist and activist, was asked to provide his thoughts on the matter remains to be seen. Whatever the reason, now he can add “terrorism expert” to his CV.
