Since My Chemical Romance disbanded in 2013, its former members have found a variety of ways to stay busy and creative. guitarist Frank Iero launched the punk project frnkiero and the cellabration, bassist Mikey Way earned praise for his rock duo Electric City and vocalist Gerard Way started a solo career with the album. Now, Gerard has signed on with DC Comics to launch a pop-up series Young Animal, aimed at mature audiences.
Way says his new DC imprint will take his comic skills in a strange, experimental direction. “I am thrilled to help bring DC’s Young Animal to life, having been raised on experimental ’80s and ’90s takes on superheroes,” Way told Teamrock.com. “I see Young Animal as a place to try new ideas, following the spirit of those books from the past but bring them somewhere else. I see it as an imprint where we can explore fine art, bold concepts, mature themes, and strangeness – with lots of heart.”
Way is no stranger to the world of comics. In 2007 he launched his own comic book series The Umbrella Academy, which was about an argumentative family of superheroes with bizarre powers. More information about Way’s mature comic series can be found at the Young Animal website.
