Will Wu-Tang Clan Perform With Ol’ Dirty Bastard Hologram At Coachella 2013?

It's not too far fetched. Raekwon has already given it some thought.

With the music world still reeling over the long-awaited announcement of the 2013 Coachella line-up, hip-hop fans fired up for the headlining performance from ‘90s hip-hop legends Wu-Tang Clan are asking the same question: will late Wu-Tang rapper Ol’ Dirty Bastard appear onstage with the rest of the band as a hologram?

It’s a fair question, as despite high-profile sets from the likes of Radiohead and Swedish House Mafia, Coachella 2012 will forever be remembered for Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg highlighting their star-studded closing set (Eminem, 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa and more all made onstage cameos) with a widely-publicized hologram of the much-revered Tupac Shakur, killed back in 1996 amidst a hail of bullets while riding in a car in Las Vegas.

Ol’ Dirty Bastard was one of the most visible members of the Wu-Tang Clan with his outrageous behavior (he notoriously allowed MTV to ride along with him in a limousine to pick up a welfare check) and inimitable flow on the microphone. An ongoing barrage of legal difficulties from assault charges to drug convictions found the rapper spending more time behind bars than on concert stages.

Sadly, Ol’ Dirty Bastard died of a drug overdose in late 2004, just two days before his 36th birthday.

Given the overwhelming response to the Tupac Shakur hologram at last year’s Coachella festival, it would make perfect sense for the eternally popular Wu-Tang Clan to honor ODB with a similar treatment when they hit the Coachella stage in April.

For Wu-Tang rapper Raekwon, the Tupac hologram immediately brought up thoughts of doing something similar with Ol’Dirty Bastard, which he discussed with Vibe last year.

“I would definitely have to have a(n) understanding with his moms,” Raekwon said at the time. “I think it all starts with [her] respect level. If [she] want us to do it and they feel like it’s cool that’s when we would continue to move on and do that. I wouldn’t jump up out of the blue and just say ‘yo, I want to reincarnate your son this way.’ I think it’s important that you give moms respect for her son.”

The Wu-Tang Clan will be joined by the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Postal Service, New Order, the Stone Roses, Blur, Social Distortion and many, many more when Coachella takes over the Indio polo fields over the weekends of April 12-14 and April 19-21.
