Tuesday night, former UFC middleweight contender announced his next career move, going up to light heavyweight. Sonnen also announced who he will take on in his debut at 205 lbs, former UFC light heavyweight champion, Forrest Griffin.
Few MMA fans know that Griffin and Sonnen have met inside the cage once before. It was nearly nine years and both men were competing in their ninth professional bout. Griffin inevitably won the bout, submitting Sonnen by none other than a triangle choke.
Now, at completely different points in their careers, the two will meet again, giving Sonnen an opportunity to avenge the loss. Sonnen is coming off back-to-back losses in title fights with middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Griffin has won three of his last four bouts, most recently defeating Tito Ortiz in the Hall of Famer’s final UFC bout.
